We had been planning to visit L’Arnsbourg restaurant in a valley near Baerenthal in Lorraine for some time now to experience Jean George Klein’s food. Let me tell you, we were not disappointed. Firstly, what a location! In 1903 the Klein family started to live here. Jean George Klein’s mother Lily attained a Michelin star in 1988.
Now, Jean George is in the kitchen. He has 3 stars and many other accolades. The way he uses ingredients and the seasons is just unbelievable. I will endeavour to create his oyster with hollandaise & cumin. His “tiramisu” was a total surprise. He stays true to his roots and we had his fantastic version of Choucroute – it just made me smile.
Amazingly, Jean George worked for 20 years in “front of house”. He still does sometimes, as we found out when he served us breakfast at the Hôtel K which his wife Nicole & daughter Julie run. His sister Cathy runs a very warm & welcoming FOH in the L’Arnsbourg. We were looked after perfectly by her team.
This is a special family run establishment – with great history – moving with the times. What I remember most? – Friendly people with passion about what they do. What I remember about Jean George? – The most humble cook I have ever met, there is a calmness to this man & his way of life which I admire. For L’Arnsbourg – Hôtel K website click here.
